The tea cultivation in Sri Lanka was started in 1870. during the British era. Tea grows well in the Badulla District. It grows well on wet slopes. It neeeds plenty of rain. it also needs a lot of sunshine. so Badulla District cover all the climatic conditions that tea needs. There are thousands of acres of land under tea cultivation in Badulla, Large tea estates can be seen in here. So many Sinhala and Tamil people works in the tea estates, We export tea to many countries, much of it for export to the Middle East, Britain and Australia. Tea estates makes very beautiful view to Badulla. There is a Tea Research Institute situated in Badulla-Passara Road
